Penguin Fun Facts!

Pristine Power: Penguins are masters of the "poop cannon." To keep their nests clean and avoid getting their tuxedo-like feathers dirty, some species can shoot their projectile waste up to four feet away.

Built-in Sunglasses: They possess a special transparent eyelid called a nictitating membrane. This works like a pair of goggles, protecting their eyes from snowy debris and allowing them to see clearly underwater while hunting.

The "Tuxedo" is Camouflage: Their iconic black-and-white look is actually a survival tactic called countershading. From above, their black backs blend into the dark ocean depths; from below, their white bellies blend with the bright surface of the water, hiding them from predators like leopard seals.

Super-Fast Swimmers: While they look a bit clumsy on land, Gentoo penguins are the fastest underwater birds, reaching speeds of up to 22 mph (35 km/h). That's roughly four times faster than the top speed of an Olympic swimmer.

Ancient Giants: Millions of years ago, penguins weren't all small and cute. Fossil records show that "Colossus penguins" (Palaeeudyptes klekowskii) once roamed Antarctica, standing nearly 6 feet tall and weighing over 250 pounds.
